Codan Communications and Solinnov were officially welcomed to the C4 EDGE team by South Australian Senator David Fawcett at an event held late August at Codan’s Adelaide headquarters.
C4 EDGE (Evolutionary Digital Ground Environment) is a defence industry co-operative of C4 subject matter experts leading a communications program scoping the demonstration of a sovereign land battlegroup and below communications environment for the Australian Army.
Paul Sangster, executive general manager of Codan Communications, said, “Codan has over 60 years’ experience delivering outstanding technical solutions for defence, safety, and security markets in some of the harshest environments on earth and we are proud to be part of Australia’s C4 EDGE communications program.”
Codan Communications as a leading international designer and manufacturer of premium communications solutions brings its worldwide capability for the military, defence, humanitarian, peacekeeping, commercial, security and public safety markets.
“Coupled with our sovereign manufacturing capabilities, Codan’s continued investment in the tactical market has provided us with significant growth over the last three years. This has enabled us to secure key programs with a variety of defence customers, such as land mine and IED detectors (to the Australian Army, Canadian Army, US Military and many more), as well as high-frequency radio systems (to US AFRICOM, US PACOM, and numerous Asia-Pacific and African defence forces).” Steven Jenkins, VP systems and solutions of Codan Communications, explained, “We are honoured to be part of the C4 EDGE communications program and welcome the opportunity to continue the enhancement of the Australian Defence Force’s capabilities.”
Solinnov, also based in Adelaide, brings its specialist digital signal processing high-performance software-defined radios.
Senator for South Australia David Fawcett congratulated the growing C4 EDGE team, saying, “This contract allows an innovative approach for a partnership of SMEs around Australia — including Codan Communications and Solinnov here in SA — to leverage their collective IP and expertise to demonstrate that Australian industry can provide an advanced, integrated command and control environment designed for the Australian Army’s mission and environment.”
Sanka Piyaratna, CEO and managing director, Solinnov, added, “We believe that future wars will be fought and won by agile, ubiquitous, and smart networks of military machines that provide intelligence and support for commanders to make human decisions. A key aspect of this endeavour is electromagnetic (EM) spectrum domination.”
Senator Fawcett added, “The Australian government has recognised that elements of Australian industry are a fundamental input to our defence capability if we are going to maintain a sovereign capacity for independent action.”
The C4 EDGE program will leverage internationally agreed open standards to grow and demonstrate Australian C4 (command, control, communications and computers) industry capacity and ability to deliver a battlegroup and below C4 capability demonstration.
Ultimately, by the end of 2021 the program will have delivered a proof of concept demonstration that shows the capability of Australian industry to further develop a protected, integrated and supportable sovereign system: one that delivers agile and resilient C2 functionality to meet the flexible, scalable and interoperability needs of a battlegroup operating independently or with partners.
Headquartered in Adelaide and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Codan Communications is uniquely positioned to solve complex electronic challenges through agile engineering, advanced manufacturing and comprehensive through-life support. Codan Communications is stable, robust and independent.
